Cal Lutheran Knights, having already beaten UNLV Rebels once during the round-robin stage, were feeling confident on their home turf. UNLV on the other hand, were looking strong during their pre-match warm-up. The pre-match field check gave me pause as I deduced that the field was at least 20 meters shorter than the real thing. Add make-shift posts at one end and no dead-ball zone, it was certainly going to make for an interesting match. Onto the match, and UNLV were the dominant force in the first half. They were strong on attack and their regular chip kicks ahead put the Knights fullback under pressure every time as the Rebels were regularly able to chase and make the tackle, and the subsequent turnovers. The Knights put points on the board first through a solid penalty kick after poor discipline at the breakdown by the visitors. On multiple occasions UNLV were in the opposition 22 and only failed to convert the territory into points due to further inadequate discipline with unnecessary side entries at ruck time. Both teams finally crossed the line shortly before half time and the match was evenly poised at 13-8 to the home team.

Another busy weekend in Southern California – coming to the end of the regular season for many divisions and the youth kicking into their playoff rounds, and a busy slate of College Premiere Division matches with full teams of three involved – the rugby is looking good in Southern California. Several matches had special acknowledgments for the armed services which provided great atmosphere and audiences for the games – San Diego put on a show!
