This document outlines a foundation as to the ARs duties, and additional points to improve your Assistant Refereeing, awareness of the game as an AR, and what you can look at to assist the referee. The referee will instruct Assistant Referees as to the extent of their duties.

"Does Law 19.8 (i) apply Law 19.11 Exception 2?" The answer was: "The provisions of Law 19.8 (i) do apply to Exception 2 in Law 19.11 which means that a receiver cannot run into a gap in the lineout until the ball has left the hands of the player throwing in."

The request for a Ruling arises from the way that players are required to join a ruck which appears to be covered by a number of sections in the Law Book and in particular: Law 16.2 (b) A player joining a ruck must bind onto the ruck with at least one arm around the body of a team-mate using the whole arm. Law 10 4 (j) Players must not charge into a ruck or maul without binding onto a player in the ruck or maul.

The Level 1 Course is the basic refereeing course. In addition to its primary goal of training referees, the course is useful for coaches, players and even parents, anyone who would like to gain a deeper understanding of rugby law.

These guidelines enable players and referees to have a clearer approach to the game, to enable consistency in Law application throughout the country. They also reflect directives from the iRB, particularly in relation to the tackle/ruck, and players staying on their feet.
