A Benefit for the Derek Thomas Fund – February 11 & 12

Over a year ago, Derek Thomas was traveling home from Mammoth, CA along with four other passengers; Derek’s girlfriend, two other fellow athletes and their coach. Their SUV lost control, flipped onto its side, and was struck by an oncoming van. Derek was pulled out with burns over 85% of his body and was given a 1% chance of survival. After one year in the hospital and 43 surgeries, he has returned home. His rehabilitation will continue for years, but his thirst for life and desire to “make-it” is inspirational. Derek has a passion for Rugby. This tournament offers the community a chance to come out and support the Thomas family as they continue their journey down the long road to rehabilitation and coping with the financial & emotional strains from his devastating burn injuries.

Youth Rugby Teams from all over California will join in the competition.

This relates to Referee Advice “Know the Laws of the Game and the local rules – know and use proper procedures.” There are standards that are established via communications from the IRB that are not readily available but will hopefully be on the SCRRS website soon.

Youth are limited to 90 minutes in games on any one day.

A tackle where the player is lifted off the ground and twisted then either dropped or driven into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground must start with a red card. It may be lowered to a yellow card if the tackler made a definite mitigation attempt such as attempting to safely lower the tackled player to the ground.

It is best to obtain a copy of original communications and the record of a related discipline hearing to get a clear understanding of these requirements. Contact me at frankhafner1@aol.com if you would like a copy.

    Cheers

Referee Advice

If you do not like to be shouted at, then don’t shout at somebody else. Be firm, using a normal, relaxed voice. Shouting indicates a loss of control, not only of oneself, but also the game. If you can’t control yourself you cannot be expected to control others.
