British Columbia U-17 Defeats Fallbrook HS Girls 27-5

Match report from Karen Fong.

Saturday August 14 saw a great match up between two top girls’ teams as the British Columbia U-17 Select side faced off against State champs the Fallbrook High’s Girls Team. Unfortunately for the local side, Fallbrook was unable to shake off the cobwebs of having the last few months off, and BC came out on top 27-5.

The first half started off with both teams playing very evenly matched rugby.  Each team fought tooth and nail for every possession with hard hitting tackles and gutsy running from both sides. In the scrums, BC clearly had a larger pack and brought a tough scum each time, but in loose play, each Fallbrook player (even down to the smallest player they had) held their own and tackled at the ankles to bring down each BC runner to the ground. Halftime score was tied 5-5.

In the second half, BC players showed off the talent, finesse and discipline that got them on a select side team, while Fallbrook clearly started to feel the loss of their captain, #8 Sammy (?) who went down with an injury at the end of the first half. With the exception of a long kick and smart follow up by Fallbrook’s #13 (which wound up as a knock on within 1 yard of the try line), Fallbrook was unable to get within striking distance during the second half.

Some other key injuries in Fallbrook’s line up (especially in their front row) opened up some holes for BC and away they went.  BC was able to capitalize with some nifty outside running with their wings and fullback and pulled away in the second half with a few more tries. BC’s standout was a fierce fullback who scored 2 long break away tries; one off of a kickoff return. Even though Fallbrook was unable to score, they never gave up and Fallbrook showed off one of the skills they are becoming well-known for in multiple phases where Fallbrook would make an outstanding tackle and poach the ball before BC’s support could get there.

At the end of the match, BC graciously commended the hosting team with gifts to their captains, coaches and MVP, as well as to the referee team.  Fallbrook returned the favor with a nice feed and gifts for the Fallbrook captains and coaches as well.

BC continues on their tour of Southern California vs Back Bay and then Hawaiian Gardens.

Referee Advice

Say commands once. When you say commands over and over, you’re teaching the players that they don’t have to do it first time you say it. Say it once and hold them to it. Instead of saying it again, play advantage or penalize the player. — Bruce Carter (NCRRS)
