2017 Morrison/Shanagher Referee Scholarship

Posted by Sigrid Valk-Feeney on December 10th, 2016

The Shanagher Morrison Referee Fund was established in the name of two of USA Rugby’s most accomplished referees and long-time administrators, Denis Shanagher & Don Morrison.

This fund will allow an aspiring referee (aged 20-27) to spend the entire 2017 season (from late-March through August) in Christchurch, New Zealand, as a full-time member of the Canterbury Referee Association or participate in the South Africa Referee Academy based in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

While abroad, the recipient will have the opportunity to learn from and train with some of the best referees in the world. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that offers full immersion in one of the world’s top rugby nations.

The Shanagher Morrison Referee Fund will cover all costs including travel, lodging, tuition, and living expenses and will also fund promotional activities after the recipient’s return.

Applications must be received by December 23rd, 2016.

Selections will be announced January 9th, 2017.

Referee Advice

Your job is to establish a calm environment for the game. Nervous or edgy officials are easily spotted by the players, coaches and fans. Chewing gum, pacing around, or displaying a wide range of emotions prior to, or during, the game will make you seem vulnerable to pressure.
